Star boosted as they seal shock Marello deal
Belfast Star coach Adrian Fulton has pulled off a major coup by managing to complete the signing of Ben Marello in time to play this weekend.
Fulton and Star chairman Bill McCotter agreed terms with the Italian-American yesterday and he is expected to arrive today ahead of Star's double header away to Maree in the Cup tomorrow and then a trip to Killorglin on Sunday.
Star were this week rocked by the injury to their 22-year-old American Delaney Blaylock, who has been ruled out for at least three weeks with a stress fracture in his right knee.
Fulton revealed that a chat with friends at Tralee Warriors helped him make up his mind that Marello would be worth signing on a two-month deal.
"Ben went to the same college as that of the Tralee player Jonathan Lawton so we were able to get some feedback before agreeing to bringing him in and he was also recommended by coach Pat Price," said Fulton.
"He's 6ft 6' and I believe can give us a real boost because we knew it was going to be very hard to replace the 25 points that was Delaney was getting us.
"It's not going to be easy because we'll have very little time with him before he has to pull on the shirt but we're delighted to have him.
"The only disappointment is that, due to Basketball Ireland rules, our new Swedish player Dave Jallow now has to sit out for 30 days before he can play."
