Super Tricks all set to be National treasure

By Robert Fenton

Consultant Charles Martyn made the trip from Helen's Bay to Shelbourne Park to watch his pup Blenhiem Tricks in action in the semi-finals of the prestigious Comerford Cakes National Puppy and came away a very happy man.

Blenhiem Tricks, handled by Hillsborough's Ronnie McKeown, put in a highly impressive display and is now one step away from Saturday's €15,000 prize.

From trap two, Tricks blew the lids down and was away like a scalded cat against some top-notch opponents but they never got to the black dog who came home several lengths ahead of another Ulster contender, Boylesports Hero, trained by Newry's Brendan Matthews, in a very sharp 28.59 (525).

The winner was given little chance in the ring, being returned a 10/1 shot.

The second semi-final went to another outsider, 7/1 rated Borneo who got up on the line to deny the strongly-fancied Sidarian Blaze (28.48).

Sidarian hit the front down the back-straight but Borneo showed great resilience to take victory.

At Drumbo, the 525 A2 final was a thriller, the £400 prize going to Sheikh Mahead.
