There was a triple disappointment for Northern Ireland at the Coventry Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Judo stars Rachael Hawkes, Joshua Green and Eoin Fleming had hoped to secure a Commonwealth Games medal, but all three suffered defeat in their respective bronze medal fights.

There was injury heartbreak for judoka Fleming. He took Australian Uros Nikolic to the golden score round in the 81kg category only to sustain an ankle injury that rendered him unable to continue. It was tough luck for Fleming who lost at the same stage in Glasgow eight years ago.

Hawkes lost to Katie-Jemima Yeats-Brown of England in the 70kg division.

For Green, it was Australian Jake Bensted that ended his campaign in the 73kg category.

Northern Ireland’s final judoka Sarah Hawkes starts her campaign tomorrow. Nathon Burns and Yasmin Javadian won bronze medals on Monday evening.
