Canadian driver James Hinchcliffe has undergone surgery after crashing during practice for the Indianapolis 500.

Safety concerns over the car have emerged with Hinchcliffe's smash one of a number over the past week.

The 28-year-old  suffered a massive accident at the first corner of the oval track. His car momentarily caught fire and also rolled upside-down before landing back on its wheels, and the driver has undergone surgery on what was said to be a thigh injury.

Pippa Mann, Helio Castroneves, Josef Newgarden and Ed Carpenter have all suffered heavy accidents that they were lucky to walk away from.

Castroneves, Newgarden and Carpenter all came in airborne crashes involving the Chevrolet chassis.

Indycar have introduced new settings to reduce speed and increase downforce in order to deal with this issue.

It is believed that Hinchcliffe's car may have suffered some sort of mechanical failure as his car was sent straight into the wall, unlike the other crashes.
