Bank on Kevin for bonus Payment at Down Royal

By Ron McKnight

The historic Her Majesty's Plate features on tonight's Down Royal card.

Despite just six runners, the listed contest is a competitive affair. Champion jumps trainer Willie Mullins has booked champion jockey Colin Keane for the mount on Laws Of Spin following a runner-up place at the Curragh last month.

Twilight Payment is the pick, though, with two solid efforts including a narrow second to Gold Cup winner Order Of St George, the winner of tonight's £50,000 feature in 2015.

On The Go Again continues to enhance his reputation and warms up for next week's Galway Hurdle by lining up tonight.

Aidan O'Brien has won several renewals of the Plate and his son, Joseph, sends Light Pillar to the Lisburn course having filled fourth at Royal Ascot last time. out.

Benkei has twice been placed in the race and turns out again while Galway is also his target.

But Twilight Payment, owned by the Godolphin operation, is taken to go one better having filled second in the race last year for Master trainer Jim Bolger and top jockey and son-in-law, Kevin Manning.

The Ger Lyons trained Bailly beat Sundance Star at Bellewstown and, if denying Glamorous Power, can claim the opening Magners sponsored two year old contest.

Blastofmagic and Nora Batt hold most appeal in the sprint race with the former getting preference while the locally trained Haqeeba has place claims for a wide draw.

Zander could supply Ger Lyons with a double, following a third place finish on his Curragh debut. No Needs Never was runner up on his debut prior to tackling a Royal Ascot event while Cruciatus, placed on both starts, also has claims in the EBF maiden.

Caesar's Comet, Secret Memories and A Likely Story form the shortlist in a very open Magners Light Handicap.

Premier League and Texas Radio also warrant consideration but have to overcome wide stalls. Caesar's Comet could follow up Fairyhouse success last time while Easy Boy gets the vote in the apprentice handicap.

Trainer Pat Martin has engaged Sean Davies who was successful last year in the race. Sleepy Head and Torthal An Ghra could supply the dangers. Brothers Joseph and Donnacha O'Brien can claim the finale with Dream Point if accounting for Cache Queen.

√Preening can recoup Sandown losses by taking Listed honours in the Markerstudy British EBF Valiant Stakes at Ascot.

James Fanshawe's lightly-raced filly was sent off the 5-2 favourite for the Coral Distaff at her first attempt at this level but could only manage to take third place behind Awesometank.

She had attracted good market support on the back of a convincing victory in a handicap over the mile at Sandown last month in what was only her second start since returning after a 211-day break.

She may have come up a little short but she is clearly worth a second chance at Listed company on what will only be her sixth race.

The feature event at York's evening fixture is the British Stallion Studs EBF Lyric Fillies' Stakes.

The filly fancied to claim top honours in the Listed contest is Roger Varian's Rasima, who with her three-year-old allowance comes out as the top-rated runner in the field.

The daughter of Iffraaj won a Nottingham handicap in the spring, but it is her latest effort - when runner-up to Smart Call in the Group Three Hoppings Stakes at Newcastle - that really confirms her a major contender for this event.
