Casamento can star at Curragh

Michael Halford's exciting juvenile Casamento has been added to the line-up for the Juddmonte Beresford Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.

Connections of the Shamardal colt were happy to approve the €10,000 supplementary fee to put the two-year-old in the Group Two contest following his great display when runner-up to Pathfork in the National Stakes.

As short as 12/1 for the English 2,000 Guineas, the Sheikh Mohammed-owned youngster was only just beaten by the experienced Pathfork on only his second career start, having won a Tipperary maiden the previous week.

“He's been in great form since his run in the National Stakes. He worked well this morning, so we decided to supplement him,” said Halford. “This could possibly be his last race of the season.”

The one-mile event has a rich recent history, with Alamshar, Azamour, Septimus, Sea The Stars and St Nicholas Abbey all on the roll of honour since the start of the decade. As usual, Aidan O'Brien is mob-handed in the one-mile feature with eight of the 15 entries — Eskimo, Factum, Seville, Robin Hood, Samuel Morse, Long Live The King, Master Of Hounds and Treasure Beach.

Kevin Prendergast has two possibles in Longhunter and Mawaakef, while Jim Bolger is double-handed with Gleadhradh and Music In The Rain.

Limerick handler Charles Byrnes will not appeal against the decision of the Listowel Stewards to hand him a €2,000 fine, having been adjudged to have used the racecourse as a training ground for his Pittoni's fast-finishing fourth in Saturday's Slan Abhaile Race.
