Limerick setting for derby date

The Last Derby will be aimed at the Ladbrokes Munster National at Limerick next month.

Eoin Griffin's six-year-old landed a big pot at Ascot last season when taking the United House Gold Cup but was subsequently pulled up in the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle.

He was back to winning ways over hurdles at Cork in July and was not disgraced in the Galway Plate.

“The Last Derby will make his next appearance in the Munster National at Limerick on October 10,” said Griffin.

“After that he'll go for the race at Ascot he won last year, they're his targets over the next couple of months.

“He's only 1lb higher than when he won at Ascot last year. He's still only six so there's plenty to come.

“He's just had a few little problems with his back but they're sorted now.

“The Galway Plate was his summer target but the way it was run didn't suit him, he just needs a strong even pace from the word go.”

Griffin usually finds one or two top-class performers during the winter as his exploits with the likes of Kazal and Lounaos show.
