McManus doubles his win chance in Downpatrick feature handicap hurdle

By Ron McKnight

Leading Irish jumps owner JP McManus is doubly represented in the feature handicap hurdle at Downpatrick today.

Whatever It Takes and Steamboat Quay trained respectively by Enda Bolger and Gordon Elliott contest a competitive event.

The first named, although the likely favourite after winning last time is passed over, with the vote going to Steamboat Quay. Tranquil Magic - a winner at the course earlier in the month.

Champion trainer and Champion jockey Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh left the track without a winner at the previous fixture despite represented by several favourites. However, it is impossible to oppose Didero Vallis - placed on her two starts in France and making her Irish debut in the opener.

First Class Ticket and Great Trango are the dangers. Alterno and Ben Runsom are the preferred pair in the Ulster Carpets Hurdle with the last named getting the selection.

Gordon Elliott, leading trainer at the course with nine winners this season, has Polymath and Masterson engaged in the maiden hurdle. Caerleon Kate has been consistent in better company and can supply a local success for Crossgar trainer Colin McBratney.

Jimmy Two Times, trained beside the course by Brian Hamilton, is the likely favourite in the beginners chase following finishing runner up at Roscommon on his penultimate start. Rueben James and Master Of Verse supply the dangers.
