Neil's Royale simply Grand

By Chris Wilson

Southfield Royale - trained by Ulsterman Neil Mulholland - has the class and staying power to cut loose in the Coral Scottish Grand National at Ayr today.

Mulholland is originally from Glenavy and now trains near Bath.

Things have not gone to plan for Mulholland's inmate this season, but there is enough evidence to suggest that all might soon be well with the world.

His novice season was a big success, with a Grade Two triumph at Doncaster backed up by a terrific second-place finish in the Feltham at Kempton.

Mulholland's charge was admittedly disappointing upon his return to action at Doncaster in January, but anything might have happened in the Kim Muir at Cheltenham last month until he fell at the ninth fence.

Southfield Royale does not look too badly weighted, and also has the assistance of Noel Fehily, who has been a bit of a maestro in the big races this season.

Meanwhile, a member of the public dressed as a jockey was escorted from the paddock yesterday at Newbury, with the Queen in attendance.

The man, believed to be on a stag party trip, was spotted by Newbury's chief executive Julian Thick before the first race and led out of the ring.

Her Majesty, celebrating her 91st birthday, was at the Berkshire track to watch her horse Maths Prize, who could only finish fifth of the six runners in the Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup EBF Stallions Conditions Stakes, won by Shutter Speed.

Newbury's head of communications Andy Clifton said: "A guy tried to walk into the parade ring with the jockeys."
