Ards maintain gap over title rivals Bangor
Ards IV recorded their third successive victory without conceding a try in Minor East 2 when they achieved a 25-3 victory in their encounter with Bangor III.
They head the table with 20 points from 11 games with Malone V two points in arrears, but with a game in hand. The Belfast side also won on Saturday against Belfast Harlequins IV 21-15. Each has only lost once, Ards to Malone 36-17, while their main rivals suffered a 29-19 defeat at Ballynahinch VII.
Conditions were far from ideal at Hamilton Park where the Minor league representatives from the neighbouring clubs locked horns with local bragging rights up for grabs.
The Black Knights from Ards took the lead with a Simon Crowe penalty and it wasn't long before they started to control the possession.
Tries followed, firstly from winger Willie McAllister before young full-back Danny Kerr showed determination to cross for the second. Bangor out-half Gary Lightbody kicked a penalty to make the half-time score 13-3.
Ards' Manager Stuart Stevenson felt his team fully warranted the interval advantage: "We took our chances when our forwards won more ball.
"When the Bangor Gryphons looked dangerous, our back row forwards Jack Coulter and Adam McKee defended superbly. No 8 Keith McIlwaine was also a constant menace with ball in hand and created a number of openings."
The young visiting team is improving with every game, but it was Ards who kept up the pressure and added two further tries.
