Ards seal last four spot

Staff Reporter

Ards IV, otherwise known as the Black Knights, qualified to meet Limavady III in the semi-finals of the McCambley Cup after a 20-8 win over CIYMS IV.

This was a repeat of an earlier season Minor League victory (39-4) but CI still gave the favourites a fright after taking an 8-3 lead.

Ards' manager Stuart Stevenson said: "The front row of Stevie Nutt, Geoff Garrett and Andrew Fletcher had the upper hand.

"John McKeag made a welcome return in the back row and Michael Higginson, playing his first game since November after tearing his hamstring, put in an energetic display in defence."

Home captain Stevie Bell opened the scoring with a penalty but the visitors hit back when Johnny Cupitt replied with a penalty before touching down.

Ards came back with 17 unanswered points on either side of the interval with two Stewart tries, two conversions and another penalty. In the other semi-final, Cookstown are at home to Ballynahinch VII.

Meanwhile, Inishowen made sure of the Minor North title with a 51-0 win over Finn Valley.
