Barden stars in England win

England made an excellent start to their Hong Kong Sevens campaign by defeating China 59-5 at Hong Kong Stadium.

Greg Barden crossed for three of England's nine tries in the Pool B clash as the Sevens series co-leaders began their assault in style.

Mat Turner (2), Dan Norton (2) Ben Gollings and Dan Caprice also touched down while Wang Chongyi claimed China's only try.

Andrew Skeen kept his composure to kick the winning conversion with just seconds remaining as Scotland edged out Tonga 12-10 in Pool C, while Wales cruised through a potentially tricky opening Group D encounter against hosts Hong Kong 35-12, Jevon Groves scoring two tries.

France were upset 12-5 by Portugal in Pool A as tries in the second half from Aderito Esteves and Joseph Gardener helped the latter overturn a five-point deficit.

New Zealand, level with England at the top of the series standings, thrashed South Korea 61-0 in the other game with Declan O'Donnell grabbing a hat-trick.

Samoa also encountered little resistance in their first game as the defending champions brushed aside Mexico 64-0 in Pool C.

Fiji overcame Malaysia 59-0 in Pool D, South Africa beat Spain 33-5 in Pool E and Australia saw off Zimbabwe 42-0 in Pool F.
