Beale stars for Waratahs

Kurtley Beale produced a wonderful all-round display as the NSW Waratahs clinched a hard-fought 23-16 victory over the Chiefs at the Sydney Football Stadium.

It was an exercise in redemption for the Waratahs after their humiliating loss to the Cheetahs two weeks earlier. However, it came at a cost with captain Phil Waugh picking up a calf strain 50 minutes into the game.

Afa Pakalani touched down for the Waratahs before they were awarded a penalty try. Beale contributed 13 points with the boot.

Tim Nanai-Williams scored the Chiefs' only try of the game in the second half.

Meanwhile, Jamie Mackintosh scored the crucial try as the Highlanders edged out the Brumbies 26-20 in Invercargill.

Jason Rutledge went over twice for the Highlanders before Mackintosh touched down in the final 10 minutes.

Matt Giteau, Andrew Smith and Patrick Phibbs were the try-scorers for the Brumbies.
