Bristol's looming relegation won't stop Madigan putting pen to paper

By David Kelly

Ian Madigan looks set to complete his move to Bristol this week after Bordeaux agreed to release him from his contract.

The 27-year-old has made no secret of his desire to leave France and after speaking with several English clubs, Bristol are in pole position to sign him.

Pat Lam takes over the mega-rich Bristol next season, but is likely to do so with them playing in the Championship after they were beaten 41-24 by fellow strugglers Worcester yesterday.

Madigan is on the verge of putting pen to paper on a contract worth over €500,000 a year, but his international career looks to be all but finished.

The former Leinster out-half went public with his frustrations about playing under Raphael Ibanez in Bordeaux and has regularly found himself warming the bench.

Madigan previously turned down the chance to join Munster before deciding on the move to France and he will desperately hope that he can reignite his career in Bristol. Playing in the Championship won't help matters, however.
