Bulls show their class

The Bulls snatched a late bonus point as they claimed a 38-22 Super Rugby win over the Blues in Pretoria.

Marcel van der Merwe went over in the final minute to add to scores from Jacques-Louis Potgieter, Jono Ross and Jan Serfontein with Potgieter also adding 16 points with the boot.

Pita Ahki scored the only try for the Blues with Simon Hickey kicking the rest of their points.

The Bulls opened the scoring after eight minutes as Potgieter emerged from a scrum on the five-metre line and beat off the tackle of Jackson Willison before crashing over and converting his own score.

Hickey nailed a penalty shortly after to reduce the arrears but Potgieter re-established the seven-point advantage with a drop-goal.

Two penalties from Hickey sandwiched one from Potgeiter to make it 13-9 before the Bulls went over for the second time in the 28th minute thanks to Ross.

The ball was loose in the Blues 22 and when Tom Donnelly scooped it up and tried to find a team-mate he could only find Ross who went under the posts with Potgieter adding the extras.

Hickey then kicked his fourth penalty of the afternoon but the Bulls extended their lead further on the stroke of half time.

The home side moved the ball through several phases before Francois Hougaard slung the ball out to Serfontein who scored in the corner to give the Bulls a 25-12 half-time advantage.

Potgieter added another three points to the tally after the break but the Blues gave themselves hope courtesy of Ahki in the 58th minute.

The ball was spread to the backs following a five-metre lineout and Hickey's smart grubber kick was pounced on by Ahki with the former adding the extras.

Hickey then booted his fifth penalty of the afternoon to reduce the gap to six points but two Potgeiter penalties stretched the advantage before Van Der Merwe latched onto a Piet van Zyl pass to seal the bonus point with Handre Pollard adding the conversion.
