Ballyclare had to earn their first outright Towns Cup success since 2018, battling back from trailing 13-3 to score five tries in a stirring contest at Ravenhill.

The Cloughan-based side’s fourth straight final – last year’s intended shootout was declared a draw due to the pandemic – was a fierce battle throughout and Dromore certainly put it up to the pre-game favourites at the start and finish to the game.

Dromore raced into a 10-0 lead after an Adam McDonald penalty and conversion from a touchdown by Graeme McCandless.

But, from there Ballyclare, with former Ulster player Ricky Lutton on the bench, gradually turned on the power as Dromore’s accuracy and discipline began to unravel.

Matthew McDowell’s penalty for Ballyclare was followed by a second successful shot at goal from McDonald but then Ross Johnston and Jack Black powered over, the latter after Dromore had lost Richard Dickson to the bin, to give the Co Antrim side a 15-13 interval lead.

Coach Mike McKeever’s squad went on from there with an Owen Kirk touchdown ahead of two tries via replacement Josh Cowan. At 32-13 up, Ballyclare looked secure but Dromore weren’t done and late converted tries by Andrew Black and Matthew Shirlow brought them back within striking distance only for the clock to end their momentum,
