Gilroy's return a major boost for 'A' team's bid to raid the Pirates

By Michael Sadlier

Craig Gilroy makes his first competitive appearance of the season tomorrow when he lines out for Ulster 'A' in their second round British and Irish Cup clash at Pool Five leaders Cornish Pirates (kick-off 2.30pm).

The 26-year-old winger suffered a stress fracture to his back when playing in the senior side's first pre-season friendly against Wasps in August, and was expected to be out of action until next month.

Gilroy's selection for the 'A' side's challenging visit to Penzance is a huge boost for Kieran Campbell's squad, as is the inclusion of the experienced Peter Nelson and Clive Ross, who are selected at out-half and flanker respectively.

And South African prop Schalk van der Merwe finally plays his first game for the province since arriving over the summer, following his recovery from a shoulder injury.

Fellow prop Ross Kane again leads the side after last weekend's opening 24-18 victory over a Scarlets Select outfit at Banbridge.

Ulster 'A': J Owens, C Gilroy, C Patterson, R Butler, D Busby, P Nelson, J Stewart; S Van der Merwe, A McBurney, R Kane (capt), J Regan, M Dalton, C Ross, A Hall, J Dunleavy. Subs: Z McCall, J Simpson, G Jones, C Montgomery, A Cairns, B Herron, J McPhillips.
