Morgan joy as Bangor fire a Cup warning

By Ronnie Ingram

Junior Cup holders Bangor strode into the second round of the Powerade Towns Cup with a 13-try 77-7 victory over Lisburn at Upritchard Park.

Bangor coach Jason Morgan said: "We had a full strength team in action as our seconds and thirds were involved in other Cup ties and on the day we were much too strong.

"It's not so long since Lisburn used to regularly defeat us but a lot of hard work has gone into improving our side over the last few seasons and we are now reaping the rewards.

"Our right winger David Charles showed his speed and determination with three of our tries and, but for injuries last season, would probably have been on the Ulster Junior squad.

"Left winger Mark Widdowson finished off a couple of tries while Jason Guthrie, who was at scrum-half, also ran in a couple."

It must be said, though, that all this would not have been possible but for the effort of the superb Bangor pack and openside flanker David Bradford was outstanding as he won at least 10 turnovers.

Towns Cup holders Ballynahinch II also booked their second round place with a 34-17 success over Carrickfergus.

The Qualifying 2 team had travelled to Ballymacarn Park after eight undefeated games in their division but the strength of the opposition led to a concession of five tries.

Dave Nicolson stamped his authority on the tie when his acceleration in the centre led to two scores.

Ballymena II eliminated Ballyclare 31-8, Armagh II were too strong for Dungannon II, winning 27-6, and Portadown recorded a 29-3 success at Limavady. The tie between last season's defeated finalists Clogher Valley and Randalstown was postponed.
