Daniel Browne wants an Ireland call

By Niall Crozier

Ravenhill spectators will watch Leeds Carnegie’s New Zealand-born back row forward Daniel Browne with particular interest tonight.

That’s because the former Bath player, who spent three years at The Rec, has announced that he would like to play for Ireland.

Browne, who qualifies to wear the green jersey through his father, also could play for England under the residency rules. Ireland is his current preference, however.

“Every player wants to play international rugby and it would great to put on the Irish jersey,” he said.

“Hopefully, on the back of a good season here, I can achieve that.

“I needed a new challenge after my bad injury at Bath, which made it hard for me to get back into the team there.

“At Bath we knew when we faced Leeds we'd face a good pack and now I'm looking forward to being on the back of that very strong pack.”
