Cardiff Blues coach Phil Davies was a relieved man after his side's 22-17 LV= Cup victory over London Wasps ended a run of six straight defeats.

Former Cardiff Blues coach Dai Young took his London Wasps to his old patch in the LV= Cup, but it was current incumbent Davies who had the last laugh in a thrilling, if error-strewn encounter.

His decision to introduce experienced fly-half Ceri Sweeney as a replacement for the misfiring Gareth Davies was rewarded as the former international grabbed the winning try. Davies said: "It's good to win. We've still got some things to fix, but the boys have shown tremendous character in recent weeks and they deserved it."

Davies had particular praise for two players: old hand Sweeney and youngster Dan Fish, saying: "Ceri played well when he came on. He's been a fantastic professional these last few weeks and it was great for him to score the decisive try.

"Dan was excellent. He runs well and has a good kicking game. I think he's a great talent for the future, not just for the Blues, but for Wales."

Wasps counterpart Young was generous in his praise of his former employers.

"I thought the best team won," he said. "We didn't play very well and they wanted it more after their recent losses. If they'd put their kicks over, it would have been more clear-cut.

"We might have had a penalty try at the end, but it would have been an injustice if we'd won as a result."

Young was critical of some of the fringe players who had been making rare appearances in the first team.

"We wanted to give them a chance to show what they could do," added Young. "But it's fair to say none of them put their hands up. We'll sit down during the week to discuss where we go in terms of selection next weekend, but we have a couple of important Premiership games coming up and we'll have to take that into account as well."
