Exiles hopes in the balance

A second-half comeback was not enough to save 14-man London Irish as their Heineken Cup campaign came crashing down with a 38-17 loss to RC Toulon at Stade Felix-Mayol.

Tries from Olivier Missoup, Mickael Ivaldi and the boot of Felipe Contepomi put Toulon in the driving seat and the game looked to have been over when the Exiles' Sailosi Tagicakibau received a second yellow card on 45 minutes.

But a spirited London Irish kept fighting and sensationally drew themselves level thanks to second-half tries from Chris Malone and then Alex Corbisiero.

But Toulon turned on the after burners and scored two tries in the last 10 minutes, through Tom May and Christian Loamanu to dash any Irish hopes of an historic comeback.

The loss saw the Exiles' European dreams put to an end and their losing streak extended to seven games in all competitions.
