Gilroy try not enough as Pirates plunder 'A' team

By Michael Sadlier

Even though Craig Gilroy marked his comeback from injury with a try, Ulster 'A' were unable to avoid defeat from their visit to Cornish Pirates in the British and Irish Cup.

The Ulster winger dashed over in the second half in what was his first competitive game of the season, after suffering a back injury in August, but the Pirates proved too strong and now look in a solid position at the top of Pool Five after two wins from two.

Ulster's other points came from a try scored by replacement Greg Jones while Peter Nelson kicked two conversions as Kieran Campbell's side tasted defeat after their opening win over the Scarlets.

Campbell will also be disappointed that his squad failed to secure a losing bonus point and especially so after Jones's score and Nelson's extras had brought them within range late on to trail 20-14.

A pretty dire first half had ended with the visitors just 3-0 behind at the Mennaye Field though they had blown several scoring chances and also been unable to take advantage of the Pirates having a man in the bin.

After the restart Pirates' flanker Tom Cowan-Dickie drove over from close range.

Will Cargill converted and the Pirates were 10-0 up four minutes into the second half.

But Ulster struck back with Gilroy crossing after a break out from deep. Nelson converted to put them just three behind.

The Pirates then hit back with Cowan-Dickie driving over again with Cargill converting and adding a late penalty.

Jones then crossed for a try and Nelson conversion to cut the Pirates' lead to 20-14.

A losing bonus now looked on but then the home side were awarded another penalty with Cargill's successful shot being the final act and ensuring Ulster went home with nothing.
