Green light given to change in promotion format in Championship

The play-off system used to determine promotion into the Aviva Premiership has been abandoned in favour of advancement for the team finishing top of the Greene King IPA Championship.

Taking effect from next season, the change is part of a three-year plan agreed by the Rugby Football Union and the two leagues involved, with the second tier of English rugby also receiving additional funding from the governing body and top flight.

"The first-past-the-post system will allow the promoted club a greater amount of time to recruit ahead of the next season, which is important for their preparation in playing in the Premiership," RFU chief executive Ian Ritchie said.
