Inst hopes of going up hit by Dundalk defeat

Senior League play-off

Instonians' chances of regaining AIL status were significantly diminished when they lost to Dundalk 15-11 in the AIL Round-Robin at Shaw's Bridge on Saturday.

They are now dependent on the results of others as under the new rules there is no potential reward for the team that finishes second. Unlike last season the winners will not automatically gain an AIL place but will face an away play-off against the team that finishes third from the bottom in 2B. This will be either Boyne, DLS Palmerston or even the penultimate Richmond.

The bottom two including Ards will be relegated.

Inst coach Wilbur Leacock was very disappointed with the result.

He said: "They were a decent team but maybe not as formidable as we expected.

"We had a great first half into the wind but unfortunately our accuracy later let us down and a few decisions didn't go our way.

"Our young team have shown commitment and worked hard all season which has been proved by our results, but at times we lacked experience especially in the final 10 minutes when we were encamped in their '22'."
