Irish Junior Cup: Cooke fight back but fail to grasp final spot

Monivea will take on Crosshaven in the Irish Junior Cup final after a 27-22 win over Cooke at Shaw's Bridge on Saturday.

The Connacht team, who have come close to qualifying for the AIL for the past number of seasons, started very strongly with a 10-point lead and went on to be 20-0 ahead by the interval.

Kevin Higgins scored Monivea's try after two minutes which Ger O'Connor converted before adding a penalty. After 11 minutes, before Cooke recovered, he converted a Gerard Divilly score.

The home team managed to hold their opponents for the next 24 minutes and then O'Connor added a penalty and Davy O'Hanlon was yellow-carded.

It was a different Cooke after the restart with Niall McCordrick crossing for a try. Clive Karnezos converted and did likewise after Stuart Lang crossed.

Monivea's Dave Prior intercepted for O'Connor to goal.

Cooke had an O'Hanlon try and an Andy Hassard penalty but it was too late and the better side made it through.
