Lions and South Africa fly-half Butch James has been handed a four-week ban by a SANZAR disciplinary committee for dangerous play.

The former Bath stand-off was cited after his high tackle on Sharks flanker Keegan Daniel during last weekend's thrilling 30-30 draw.

Judicial officer Rob Stelzner found James guilty of contravening Law 10.4(e), a dangerous tackle on a player off the ball, and decided the offence merited a mid-range punishment.

The Lions have a bye in this weekend's final round of Super Rugby regular-season fixtures so the suspension has been deferred until June 20, meaning it will run through to July 17.

The Springboks play Australia in their first Tri-Nations match on July 23, meaning James will be available for selection.
