In the long history of the British and Irish Lions, for all the myriad challenges that have been thrown at touring coaches, none have had the type of day just endured by Warren Gatland prior to this eight-try romp against the Sharks in Johannesburg.

On Tuesday, the preparations for this much-debated trip looked in tatters, the side’s weekend game postponed due to a Covid outbreak among their opponents while the Test series appearing seriously compromised too by the Springbok’s own issues with the virus that had put paid to one of only two warm-ups they’d play.
