Mafi joins Leicester

Leicester have added Tonga lock Steve Mafi to their squad as an injury dispensation signing.

Geoff Parling is expected to miss the opening three months of the season due to a neck injury and fellow second-row forward Richard Blaze has a foot problem, so Mafi comes in to strengthen Richard Cockerill's squad ahead of the Aviva Premiership season, which begins this weekend.

Director of rugby Cockerill said: "We've got good competition right through the squad but injuries to Richard Blaze and Geoff Parling have left us a bit thin in the second row. It is very close to the start of the season and I'm delighted that we've been able to bring in Steve."

Mafi, 20, made his senior Togo debut against Samoa this summer and joins Leicester from the Waratahs in Australia.

Cockerill added: "He has come through the ranks within Australian club rugby and has been very highly regarded there. He's a big, strong guy, he's young and ambitious, and we're looking forward to seeing how he settles into his rugby here."
