Marler ban reduced on appeal

Harlequins prop Joe Marler has had his ban for striking an opponent reduced from three weeks to two following a Rugby Football Union appeal hearing.

The 21-year-old had been handed his initial suspension after being found guilty of striking a London Irish player during the Aviva Premiership clash between the two sides on the opening day of the season.

But Marler chose to appeal the decision and his case was heard by Independent Judicial Officer Gareth Rees QC at Twickenham, leading to a reduction that means he will be available to play again on September 27.

An RFU statement read: "Joe Marler's suspension for striking an opponent on the opening day of the Aviva Premiership season was today reduced from three to two weeks on appeal."
