Medallion Shield: Ballymena Academy are the 2018 champions after narrow win over Campbell College

Ballymena Academy 10-8 Campbell College

By Gareth Hanna

Ballymena Academy are the 2018 Danske Bank Medallion Shield winners.

They earned a hard-fought 10-8 win over Campbell, largely thanks to two clinical Ross McKay kicks.

Campbell began strong and looked like breaking through for an early try but had to make do with an Ollie Ralston penalty.

They were punished on 17 minutes when Harry Andrews bulled his way over in the corner for Ballymena. Ross McKay slotted home a superb conversion for 7-3 but the Academy couldn't hold out until the break.

Campbell went back on the front foot towards the end of the half and finally made that pressure pay on the blow as Luke Collins got over for an unconverted try and an 8-7 half-time advantage.

Campbell almost scored a try at the start of the second period but a big tackle from Jonathan Cochrane kept them out.

He got his reward as Ballymena enjoyed a long period of pressure in the middle of the second period and bagged the crucial score as McKay kicked home another penalty to edge his side into a 10-8 lead.

That proved enough as they held out any late Campbell pressure to seal the win.
