Premiership Rugby elect Smith

Sale Sharks' Quentin Smith has been elected as the new chairman of Premiership Rugby.

Smith takes over from Leicester's Peter Tom, and will be assisted by Newcastle chief Dave Thompson, who was elected deputy chairman in July. Smith's appointment was made at a meeting of Premiership clubs' shareholders.

"These are exciting times for the club game in England with growing support, new sponsors and more television coverage," said Smith. "On behalf of all the Premiership rugby clubs, I would like to thank Peter Tom for his leadership and drive during this period of growth. I shall look to build on this in the next phase".
