Back after five weeks off, Ulster returned to action with an impressive 19-13 away win over Glasgow Warriors in Conference A of the Guinness PRO14.
ichael Lowry, Craig Gilroy and Nick Timoney all ran in tries, while captain for the night Jordi Murphy had a strong game both with and without the ball.
Who else did well? Michael Sadlier gives his opinion...
Starting XV
Michael Lowry - 9
There were some difficult moments but ran a great line for his try, gave Gilroy the assist and generally he absolutely terrified Glasgow’s defence.
Craig Gilroy - 6
Scrambled back to touch a ball down from a Glasgow attack and then just after missing a scoring chance he raced in for Ulster’s second.
James Hume - 8
After losing the ball in contact he made up for it immediately with a great rip and did really well for Lowry’s score. Finished strongly alongside McCloskey.
Stuart McCloskey - 7
An early carry out of defence and then came two more. When he was needed, the powerful centre was there whether in attack or defence.
Rob Lyttle - 5
His return saw him with very little to do in the opening half of play but after joining a ruck he got a run on an angle into midfield.
Ian Madigan - 8
Turned over in an early maul but was on hand to launch the attack for Lowry’s touchdown. He was instrumental in so much of Ulster’s great work.
John Cooney - 8
Not as sharp in the opening period but he provided a great assist for Lowry and was involved for Gilroy’s too. Got stronger as the game went on.
Eric O’Sullivan - 6
Was quite a contest with Oli Kebble but was initially getting the nod from the referee. Made a strong carry for Lowry’s try but made way along with Andrew.
John Andrew - 5
Good support for Coetzee for what was a disallowed score. Turned over by Rob Harley which wasn’t a great look and left after a splintering scrum.
Marty Moore - 6
His first carry saw him emptied and then came a knock-on but there was some nice handling on show. The scrums? That was all rather baffling really.
Alan O’Connor - 7
He works relentlessly without much of the glory and there was an excellent rip on Hastings. Kept it all going to the end as per usual.
Kieran Treadwell - 7
His 100th cap and there was some decent defensive work with him shooting out of the line. Won a lineout turnover and was involved in Ulster’s power plays.
Nick Timoney - 8
Had the ball ripped from him by Rob Harley near Glasgow’s line but then really stepped up with Coetzee gone and scored a crucial try.
Jordi Murphy - 8
The first time skipper carried hard and put in the tackles too. He also upped the ante in the second half and won a critical late penalty.
Marcell Coetzee - 6
Got a nice hit on Nakarawa and then was over the line but the score was ruled out. Shipped a worrying-looking injury at the end of the half.
