Magners League: Past masters who try-ed their best

If there are Ulster tries tonight at Parc y Scarlets, it will be interesting to see who gets them.

Why? Because a number of Ulster try-scorers in past clashes with Scarlets are no longer on the books at Ravenhill.

Tommy Bowe (Ospreys) scored at Stradey Park in Ulster’s last outing at the old Llanelli stadium.

It wasn’t enough to prevent a 32-8 whipping on October 12, 2007. In February 2008, when Ulster won 20-8 at Ravenhill, their try-scorers were Neil Best (Worcester), Isaac Boss (Leinster) and Matt McCullough (retired).

In September of the same year, Clinton Schifcofske (Crusaders) kicked three penalties in Ulster’s 16-9 home defeat by the Welsh side.

And, on October 2, 2009, Timoci Nagusa (Montpellier) bagged one of the tries on a night when Ulster went nap in winning 45-24.

On the plus side, Ulster’s other try-scorers on that occasion were Willie Faloon, Andrew Trimble (2) and Ian Whitten, with Ian Humphreys weighing in with 20 points by landing four conversions and four penalties.

And, fortunately, all four are very much on board the Ulster train at this stage.
