RaboDirect Pro12: Jared op a success but it’s a long road back

By Michael Sadlier

Ulster’s sidelined new signing Jared Payne has undergone surgery to the season-ending Achilles tendon injury he suffered playing in the PRO12 League game against Benetton Treviso just under a fortnight ago.

The Kiwi full back underwent the operation to his ruptured tendon in England on Tuesday and initial reports suggest that the surgery went well without complications.

The 26-year-old, who sustained the injury in only his third start for Ulster, will be reviewed in a fortnight’s time to assess his progress.

By that time, the wound should have settled and begun healing and Ulster should be able to make a more precise judgment on his rehabilitation and recovery.

However, it is still believed that Payne is likely to be out of contention for most, if not all, of Ulster’s season.

Ulster’s next assignment is away to Scarlets in the PRO12 League on Saturday week.

Meanwhile, the Ulster Ravens are back in action tomorrow night when they take on Leinster ‘A’ at Donnybrook (kick-off 6pm).

Prop Callum Black will make a welcome return to action after being out with a neck problem since Ulster’s friendly clash with Harlequins in August.

The 25-year-old American-born player, who is also Irish qualified, is in his first season at Ravenhill after being signed from Worcester Warriors and will pack down tomorrow alongside John Burns and Adam Macklin as the Ravens begin their warm-up programme for next month’s British and Irish Cup campaign which opens on November 11 when they host Doncaster.

Elsewhere in the Gary Longwell-coached side, Neil McComb will bring his experience to the pack while at half-back Paddy Jackson teams up with Ian Porter in an exciting combination.

A number of Ulster Academy players will also feature including Dungannon’s Ali Birch, Chris Farrell, Conor Gaston and Chris Cochrane

Ulster Ravens v Leinster ‘A’: R Andrew; C Gaston, M Allen, C Farrell, C Cochrane; P Jackson, I Porter; C Black, J Burns, A Macklin; I Henderson, N McComb; C Joyce, D McGuigan, A Birch. Subs: N Annett, K McCall, R Jablonski, J Simpson, S O’Connell, B McIlroy, J McKinney, P Nelson.
