Rainey battle through after being pushed all the way by Portadown

Danske Bank Schools' Cup: Rainey Endowed 13-5 Portadown College

Rainey qualified to meet the winners of the Bangor Grammar/ Omagh Academy tie after a closer than anticipated win over Portadown College in Magherafelt.

Following a number of phases, Rainey stretched their opponents to create an overlap and Ciaran Doyle had an unopposed run in to the line.

The visitors deservedly struck back to level when, following a catch and drive, a mass of bodies crossed the line with centre Dylan Nelson coming up with the ball.

It was Rainey who took a 10-5 lead at the halfway stage when Ben McCloskey broke the line and fed Jack Bresland, who made ground and off-loaded for Karl Warner to dive over.

There was little between the teams in the second half but Rainey put themselves two scores ahead in the final five minutes when Harry Evans added a penalty.

"Portadown made it difficult for us," said Rainey coach Chris Campbell.

"Having had an earlier tie maybe helped ease their nerves but at one stage the tie could have gone either way."
