Sale open season in style

Sale opened the new Aviva Premiership season with a comprehensive 35-18 win over Newcastle at Edgeley Park to mark head coach Mike Brewer's first game in charge in fine style.

The former New Zealand flanker saw tries from debutants Karena Wihongi and winger Tom Brady, plus four penalties and two conversions from fly-half Nick Macleod, help his side establish a 26-13 interval lead.

A further two penalties from Macleod, who ended with 22 points, plus a drop goal from Wales scrum-half Dwayne Peel after the break completed a dominant display from the Sharks.

The Falcons had notched the game's first try through Brent Wilson, who also added a late consolation, with former Munster fly-half Jeremy Manning booting eight points.
