Local rivalries set to headline third round of Ulster Schools’ Cup as draw throws up intriguing ties

Three of the eight third round ties in the Danske Bank Schools’ Cup will be local rivalries after the draw for the next round set up some mouthwatering clashes.

On the north coast, Limavady Grammar and Coleraine Grammar have been paired together in round three, as have Dromore High and Banbridge Academy, and Regent House and Bangor Grammar.

It makes for an intriguing third round, which also includes co-defending champions Royal School Armagh enter the competition by hosting Belfast Royal Academy in arguably the tie of the round.

In the other ties, Foyle College will host Belfast High, Omagh Academy will travel to Grosvenor Grammar, Dalriada are at home to Enniskillen Royal, and Down High are on the road at Rainey Endowed.

The draw was made after the second round was played this morning, with Grosvenor the most impressive side as they ran up the scoreline against Strabane Academy, winning 43-5 away from home.

Banbridge Academy were relatively comfortable winners as they saw off Friends’ 15-5 on home soil, with Belfast High also producing a fine performance to down Portadown 27-14 to progress.

Dalriada and Limavady Grammar progressed to the third round off the back of impressive defensive displays as they held Cambridge House and Lurgan College scoreless, with Regent House rounding off the second round results with a 24-3 win over Carrickfergus.

All the teams that were eliminated in the second round drop into the Schools Trophy quarter-finals, where they will be joined by Larne Grammar who lost to Carrickfergus in the first round.
