Rainey are missing key men for Schools' Bowl final with Dalraida

By Ronnie Ingram

Rainey Endowed will be without two key pack members when they face Dalriada in the Danske Bank Schools' Bowl final at Eaton Park this afternoon (2.30pm).

Coach Chris Campbell said: "Unfortunately we will start without our captain and flanker Calvin Smyth, who has a knee ligament problem, and tight head prop Connor Brennan, who has a shoulder injury.

"We will still have a formidable pack as I expect the game to be a contest between the forwards."

In the Cup, Rainey were eliminated by a strong Down High side but have since gained morale-boosting home victories over Belfast Royal Academy and then Foyle College in the semi-finals.

Against both teams they trailed early on but came back strongly in the second half with Anton Lupari crashing over for the winning try against the Derry side.

Dalriada also lost away from home in the Cup, at Bangor Grammar, but have since gained narrow wins over both Grosvenor Grammar and Banbridge Academy.

They trailed 11-0 against Banbridge before also upping their game with a dominant second period. Their last two ties were also on home territory.

In the final, both teams cannot afford to be lax at the start and Rainey will be hoping to repeat their narrow 16-12 early season win over their opponents. Both teams have changed significantly since and on this occasion Rainey are also away from home.

Some of the Dalriada players have final experience. In last season's Subsidiary Shield final, they defeated Ballymena Academy 12-3.
