Schools’ Cup: Dungannon Royal 18 Coleraine AI 33

Four tries within fifteen minutes helped Coleraine Inst come from behind before recording a convincing 25-point victory over Dungannon.

A Peter Cashel try and a Peter Nelson penalty gave the impression that the home team was heading for a straightforward victory, but a concerted Coleraine effort combined with some slack defending allowed the visitors to come back into the tie.

After 23 minutes good work from Patrick Farrell, Stuart McCaffrey and Stephen Best led to an Adam Dysart try and it was followed quickly by two more.

Winger David McIntyre finished off a move which involved McCaffrey and Josh Murdock.

From the kick-off the ball was fielded by Simon McLean with Farrell running up the blind side a ruck ensued. McCaffrey broke through before passing to Murdock who crossed in the right hand corner.

Before half-time a loose clearance from Dungannon allowed Farrell to again make ground and link with McCaffrey who touched down for Michael Poskitt to add the points for a 26-8 lead.

Seventeen minutes into the second period Coleraine didn't clear and Nelson ran through the defence to bring his team back into the encounter.

The visitors gained possession from the drop-out and a break by Alan Clarke set up Best and following a ruck Farrell found McCaffrey who scored for Poskitt to goal.

Nelson once again showed his skills when he intercepted and ran the length of the pitch to score, but it was a disappointing effort from his team that never recovered from the first-half onslaught.
