Schools' Cup: Ruthless Campbell make final

By Ronnie Ingram

Campbell College 42 Ballyclare High 8: Campbell College booked their place in the Northern Bank Schools' Cup final at Ravenhill on St Patrick's Day after crushing Ballyclare High yesterday.

Campbell ran in seven tries in their 42-8 win at Ravenhill, setting up a final showdown with RBAI.

Brian Robinson, who coaches Campbell along with Gareth Fry and Hugh Campbell, said: “We competed really well and were more clinical.

“Ballyclare tried to force the pace after the re-start but had difficulty penetrating our defence. We had a lot more possession and took our chances.”

Having taken a a 22-8 interval advantage, Campbell — with the slight wind advantage in the second period — were seldom out of Ballyclare’s territory.

Campbell gradually built up pressure and No 8 Charlie Gallagher went over for the opening try. Rory Scholes converted.

Ballyclare made ground and were rewarded with a Johnny Holmes try but following some broken play Campbell again went on the attack and their captain John Creighton crossed for Scholes to again add the points.

Campbell were starting to win more ball and after multi phases winger Moss Rodgers added the third try.

Scholes also kicked a penalty while Holmes replied with one for Ballyclare right on half-time.

The Belmont team's confidence grew and from then on it was really only a matter of how many tries they would score.

Campbell won a ball against the head and Gallagher picked up to go over on the blind side.

More forward dominance and a surge allowed scrum-half Glenn Baillie to dart over for another try.

Scholes ran in on the right and then another fine move led to second row Shane Moffett scoring.

Ballyclare coach Daniel Soper said: “We made too many mistakes, especially in the first half, and you can't do that against a team like Campbell.

“They were better than us on the day but we could have been better. I don't know if it was lack of match practice or the big occasion but we were seldom in a position to exert pressure on them.”
