The Stormers have named uncapped fly-half Gary van Aswegen in their side for Saturday's Super Rugby opener against the Lions in Cape Town.

He is one of three 21-year-old debutants included by coach Allister Coetzee in his starting XV, with Danie Poolman named on the wing and Rynhardt Elstadt pencilled in at lock.

Regular number 10 Peter Grant has to make do with a place on the bench after returning from a stint in Japan.

Poolman is given his chance as a consequence of Gio Aplon's knee injury.

Elsewhere, Deon Fourie fills in for the injured Tiaan Liebenberg at hooker, while South Africa prop CJ van der Linde plays his first game for the franchise at prop.

Asked about his decision to field Van Aswegen, Coetzee said: "Gary knows the (playing) systems and he's given a good account of himself in the pre-season matches.

"He's in the right place in terms of development at this moment."

The 2010 runners-up had a bye last week and Coetzee highlighted the importance of starting with victory.

He added: "You cannot afford to lag behind and, since it's a home game, it's one that we are expected to win.

"This team is highly motivated to win home games."
