Trimble blow for Ireland

Ireland winger Andrew Trimble has been ruled out of the RBS 6 Nations opener against Italy with a broken right hand.

An X-ray on Monday revealed the Ulster back had broken a metacarpal in Saturday's 43-6 Heineken Cup victory over Aironi.

The 26-year-old will definitely miss the clash with Italy on Saturday week with a date yet to be set for his return.

Stephen Ferris and Tommy Bowe underwent scans on knee problems and an update on their progress is expected in the next 24 hours.
