Cooney lands triple crown

By Jonathan Bradley

There was a prestigious triple for scrum-half John Cooney at the Heineken Ulster Rugby Awards last night with the 28-year-old picking up Player of the Year, Supporters Player of the Year and Writers Player of the Year.

In his first season at Ulster since making the switch from Connacht, the Dublin native has become a huge favourite at Kingspan Stadium and led the entire PRO14 in points and scoring passes this year.

The black-tie gala held at La Mon hotel outside of Belfast proved a big night too for Nick Timoney after the back-rower was named Young Player of the Year and Academy Player of the Year, and Larissa Muldoon who was recognised as the Women's Player of the Year.

The evening also provided an opportunity for Ulster to say goodbye to a number of departing stars with Tommy Bowe, Andrew Trimble, Charles Piutau, Robbie Diack, Callum Black and Paul Marshall all leaving this summer, the latter receiving the Heineken Ulster Rugby Personality of the Year award after over a decade in service of his native province.
