Arm’s length: Jacob Stockdale takes on Northampton Saints

As originally conceived, the curtain being raised on the Rainbow Cup this evening was to herald the start of a new partnership between what had been the Guinness PRO14 and South Africa's biggest club sides, a much-needed shot in the arm for a league blighted by an increasing competitive imbalance and with only one champion since 2018.

As is, with Ulster welcoming Connacht to Kingspan Stadium tonight, Wednesday's confirmation of the seemingly inevitable, that the South Africans will not be in the northern hemisphere due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, the competition begins instead amid reactions ranging from indifferent to bemused.
