Ulster have announced the departure of loosehead prop Schalk van der Merwe, who has returned to South Africa.

The rarely seen prop departs having made just three appearances for the province, with his last outing in the friendly against Uruguay last month at Kingspan Stadium.

Van der Merwe, who has had stints with the Golden Lions and Montpellier, joined Ulster from the Southern Kings at the start of last season, but the early stages of his time in Belfast were curtailed by injury.

After two less than impressive appearances against Benetton and the Dragons, the latter of which his only start in an Ulster jersey, the Tzaneen native only made one more appearance in a drubbing at Connacht.

Van der Merwe, 28, did not appear for Ulster this season, with Andy Warwick and Academy prop Eric O'Sullivan sharing the time in every game so far, and was last seen playing for Banbridge in the All-Ireland League.
