Ulster team named for Uruguay test

Adam McBurney has been named as captain of a youthful Ulster side to face Uruguay at Kingspan Stadium on Friday evening

The game against ‘Los Teros’, who are currently ranked 18th in the world, will be Ulster’s first against international opposition since the visit of Portugal to Belfast in November 2008.

For the Uruguayan team, it will be a key fixture in their November tour as they continue their preparations for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

McBurney will be joined in the front row by Schalk van der Merwe and Tom O’Toole, while Matthew Dalton and Alex Thompson will combine in the second row. Brothers Matty and Marcus Rea will play together for the first time in a senior Ulster jersey, with Greg Jones also named alongside them in the back row.

Jonny Stewart and Johnny McPhillips will direct affairs from the half back positions. Academy players James Hume, Stewart Moore, Angus Kernohan, Iwan Hughes and Bruce Houston complete the backline.

Kieran Campbell has opted for a 6/2 forwards/backs split on the bench; Zack McCall, Corrie Barrett, Peter Cooper, Joe Dunleavy, David McCann and Jonah Mau’u provide cover up front, while Graham Curtis and Michael Stronge are selected as the backline options.
