Ulster v Scarlets: Dan McFarland gets off to winning start in nail-biter at Kingspan Stadium

By Adam McKendry

Ulster won their first match under Dan McFarland and got their Guinness PRO14 campaign off to the perfect start as they won a thriller against the Scarlets, 15-13 at Kingspan Stadium.

John Cooney's five penalties won out for Ulster, but it was his nerveless finish in the last minute of the game that finally put the game to bed as the hosts picked up their first points of the season.

Scarlets fly-half Rhys Patchell had opened the scoring with an early try, but three of Cooney's five penalties had Ulster up by two points at the interval.

After the break, Cooney put over another penalty but replacement fly-half Dan Jones slotted two of his own to put the visitors in front passing the hour mark.

Despite not scoring during a yellow card period for Scarlets flanker Ed Kennedy, Ulster eventually found the winner when David Bulbring hauled back Cooney off the ball - getting a yellow card himself - and the scrum-half kicked the winning score.
