Ulster will host Wasps as warm-up for the new campaign

By Jonathan Bradley

Ulster have announced that the first of their pre-season friendlies ahead of the 2017-18 campaign will be a visit from Aviva Premiership finalists Wasps.

The game, which will be played on Thursday, August 17, could see Dai Young bring his Coventry-based outfit as English champions should they overcome the challenge of Exeter Chiefs at Twickenham on Saturday.

The game, which will see Charles Piutau go up against his former side, will be a first chance for Ulster fans to see new signings John Cooney, Schalk van der Merwe and the as-yet-unidentified replacement for Arno Botha, who saw his projected move to Kingspan Stadium fall through.

It will also be a first time in Belfast for new coaches Jono Gibbes and Dwayne Peel, who will join Les Kiss this summer.

Tickets are to go on online sale next Monday, with the province also set to play a second friendly away from home a week later in preparation for the new season.
