Varndell extends Wasps contract

Wasps have announced a contract extension for their former England wing Tom Varndell.

Varndell is the top try-scorer in this season's Aviva Premiership, and is just five touchdowns behind all-time Premiership leading scorers Steve Hanley and Mark Cueto, who jointly hold the record with 75.

Varndell, 27, joined Wasps from Leicester in 2009, and he said: "I am really excited to be here for the next few years."

He went on: "The group of players we have here know what it's like when the going gets tough, and I think we are all the stronger for what we went through last season.

"Now, things are looking up, and we've got a fantastic squad of players who I believe can really achieve something together in the coming seasons.

"You only have to look around you at some of the young talent we have coming through and some of the experience that (rugby director) Dai Young has organised around that, to get excited about what is to come.

"I am loving my rugby this season, and the type of rugby that we are playing at Wasps is fantastic when you are a winger."

Varndell and his fellow Wasps wing Christian Wade have established themselves as the Premiership's most dangerous strike-force this term, while also shining during the club's Amlin Challenge Cup campaign.

Young added: "Tom has played a big part in our improvement this season, and his finishing is second to none.

"I am really pleased he is going to be a Wasps player for the foreseeable future."
