Waratahs skipper Phil Waugh faces a battle to be fit for Friday's blockbuster Super 15 clash against the Crusaders after suffering a bicep injury during Saturday's convincing win over the Reds.

Waugh, who is renowned for his ability to play through the pain barrier, failed to return to the field after half-time after receiving a heavy knock.

"I'm probably in a reasonable amount of doubt, I'd say," Waugh said. "I just got a whack on my bicep so I'll just have to assess it and see how it pulls up."

Waugh was not the only casualty to come out of the clash, with man of the match Tatafu Polota-Nau to undergo scans on his shoulder.

Fly-half Berrick Barnes will also be monitored throughout the week after leaving the field with a heavy concussion in the 55th minute of the 30-6 triumph.

Coach Chris Hickey is confident he possesses the depth of squad to cope should all three stars fail to prove their fitness this week.

"Tatafu has just got an AC joint irritation, but we'll probably need to get a scan on it just to make sure it's nothing too much more than that," Hickey said.

"I guess when you play a physical game like that you're always going to come off with a few injuries and we'll assess them.

"We've talked about the depth in our squad and we've got great confidence in the players that can be called on if required."
